mission
Farm Sanctuary works to protect farm animals from cruelty, inspire change in the way society views and treats farm animals, and promote compassionate vegan living.
about the organization
In an ideal world, there would be no need for Farm Sanctuary. There would be no factory farms or stockyards, and cows, pigs, chickens, and other farm animals would not be abused. They would be free to laze in the breeze, bathe in the sun, scratch at the earth, and enjoy life.
Unfortunately, animals raised on today’s industrialized farms are treated like unfeeling commodities, and their basic needs are completely ignored. They are crowded in factory farm warehouses, and confined so tightly that they cannot walk, turn around or lie down comfortably. Farm animals are de-beaked, de-toed, tail-docked, confined, crowded, neglected and denied the very basics of life: fresh air, wholesome food, room to move and, most importantly, freedom.
Farm Sanctuary was founded in 1986 to combat the abuses of factory farming and to encourage a new awareness and understanding about “farm animals.” At Farm Sanctuary, these animals are friends, not food.
Through the years, they have rescued thousands of animals, and educated millions of people about their plight.
impact
Over the last 25 years, Farm Sanctuary members, activists and staff have:
- maintained the largest rescue and refuge network for farm animals in North America, providing lifelong care and rehabilitation to farm animals rescued from cruelty and neglect
- campaigned relentlessly to prevent cruelty, and to encourage legal/policy reforms that promote respect and compassion for farm animals
- implemented a multitude of campaigns, such as No Downers, which seeks to prevent the inhumane transport and marketing of “downed animals” (animals too sick to stand)
- urged institutions such at the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to stop endorsing inhumane farming systems
strategy
Farm Sanctuary rescues animals, educates the public about the centrality of the vegan diet to compassionate living, and advocates for animals through investigation, prosecution, legislation and litigation.
Farm Sanctuary holds that legislative reform complements their aspiration to achieve a world free of the violence visited daily upon farm animals in animal agriculture. Incremental improvements are steps in a larger process. They serve to educate millions who have never before considered the plight of farm animals; they create modest improvements in the lives of farm animals; and they can squeeze the industry, making big agribusiness more accountable for the harm it causes.
